Financing Your Round-the-World Trip

Posted on September 8, 2013 at 8:00 AM

If travel is your thing, you might just someday get the itch to pick up your life and travel around the world for a year. To make this dream a reality, you’ve got to figure out how to pay for it. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to do that.

Probably the most common way to finance an extended round-the-world trip is to save up for it. If you cut expenses, live frugally and save any extra money you get, you can probably save enough money for an extended trip after a year or two. While traveling overseas, you can use international money transfer services to get the money you need while traveling.

If you plan to spend an extended period traveling, it may not make sense to keep many of your things, especially if you don’t have anywhere to store them.

You will probably want to take along clothes, shoes and some personal electronic devices, but everything else may be a candidate for sale.

TVs and other electronics, household appliances, clothes and furniture are all things that you can sell to finance your extended trip.

Check with friends first to see if they want to buy some of your stuff. You can also use social networking sites and online classified services. You may even want to resort to a good old-fashioned rummage sale.

If your plan is to drop off the face of the Earth to be a vagabond, the last thing you probably want to think about is working, but one way to pay for your travels is to do a little work on the side while you are gallivanting around the globe.

If you have a skill that’s in demand, such as writing, photography or web design, you may be able to do some freelance work while you are traveling. You might even be able to find a travel publication that will pay you for photos and blog posts about the places you visit.

Another option is to find work in the places you go. One option is to find short-term work as an English teacher.

Many countries will hire Americans, Canadians and Brits who have no other qualification other than the fact that they are native English speakers.

Of course, if you don’t have stuff to sell, you don’t want to wait to take your trip until you can save the money and you don’t want to do any work at all while traveling, you could finance your trip around the world.

You can take out a personal loan and then use international money transfer services to get money as you need it while you are traveling. You can also use credit cards to pay as you go and then deal with the bill afterward.
